“This is a great house,” Julia said with sincerity in her voice as she spun in a slow circle examining the living room. Lynn smiled, full of pride. She had made the necessary improvements to her little fixer-upper slowly over the last few years and now had to admit, the house was perfect for everything she needed.

“Thank you,” Lynn said. “I like it.”

Julia nodded. “I can see why. Do you live alone?” she asked, starting to wander around the room. Admiration was evident in her eyes. Lynn watched her every move. She looks perfect here, she thought and felt almost as if all the years making the house a home was for Julia.

Julia stopped and looked over her shoulder, still waiting for an answer. Lynn forced herself to refocus. “Yes,” she replied. “I'm kind of a private person, and I make enough money that I don't need roommates.” She moved closer to Julia. “So, do you really like the place?”

The woman smiled and reached out, touching Lynn's arm. Lynn could almost feel her skin burning at the physical contact, but she forced herself to stay still. “I love it,” Julia answered. “When you were talking at the diner about all your hard work on your house, I had no idea it would look like this.”

Lynn felt herself blush a little both at the reminder of all her talking over dinner as well as from the praise. Still, she was immensely pleased Julia was happy. It mattered a great deal that she like the home. “Want a quick tour?” Lynn asked. Julia pulled back her hand and glanced toward the back of the house where it was obvious the bedrooms would be located.

“No funny business?” she murmured and looked back at Lynn.

Their eyes met and held. “I promise,” Lynn stated. After another moment, Julia smiled again and took Lynn’s hand.

“Show me,” she said, and Lynn felt warmth all through her as she led Julia across the room.

They wandered from room to room of her little bungalow. Julia continued to voice her admiration. When they came to the large master bathroom, she fingered the shower curtain with a look of longing. After a pause, she turned to Lynn. “Would it be okay if I took a hot shower?” she asked softly.

Lynn's heart skipped a beat, and she swallowed hard but remained composed. No funny business, she reminded herself. “Yes,” she said. “And I have some sweats and a t-shirt you can wear afterward if you’d like. They’ll be quite a bit too big, but if you want to feel ... well ...” Her sentence trailed off as she realized what she was about to say might not sound polite.

“Clean?” Julia finished for her. “Yes, that would be nice.”

Lynn fetched the fresh clothes. It only took her a minute, but when she returned she heard water running in the shower already. The bathroom door was ajar, but she hesitated. Does she mean for me to come in with the clothing? Is she already bathing? Finally, she just knocked timidly and called out to her.
